The COVID-19 pandemic has seen companies in a variety of industries embrace remote work or hybrid models in a bid to protect themselves from the widespread fallout that has devastated world economies. Countries have offered expedited visas, hotels improved their models to encourage workations, and now Princess Cruises (a cruise line owned by Carnival Corporation & plc) has thrown its hat in the ring with its latest offering, meant to lure digital nomads and workationers.

According to a press release, the company’s connectivity partner SES will be launching a new satellite constellation later this year meant to improve the reliability and connectivity of Wi-Fi while at sea. This will enable cruisers to enjoy “land-like internet” on any of the Princess liners, turning the boats into “offices at sea”.

The press release further promises that its new MedallionNet Wi-Fi service will have all its passengers enjoy remote working, distance learning, and have the opportunity to securely conduct important transactions while enjoying a picturesque video conference backdrop on the horizons thousands of miles away from home. This Wi-Fi service also acts as the heart of the unmatched experience that passengers on the Princess boats enjoy, as it ensures seamless access to various amenities while on board, replacing the traditional cruise card.

In addition to improved internet access, the cruise line also promises to offer its working professionals the following perks:

  • Keyless stateroom entry
  • On-demand food, beverage, and retail items delivered anywhere on board while you continue work or lead a video conference call.
  • Friends and family locator or chat function to find your travel partner when work is complete.

Also, the company recently introduced their Book with Confidence policy, which will allow guests to change their reservation up to 30 days before the start of their vacation, offering them cancellation fees as a future cruise credit.

So if you’ve been looking to break free from the monotony of working from home, or you’re craving a sea adventure, this might be your chance to enjoy yourself without the fear of being disconnected with those on land. The company is adhering to COVID-19 protocols, with a majority of their boats moored in various locations. But don’t pack your bags just yet. The earliest bookings will be from June of this year.
